Asam gelugor the local name for Garcinia atrovirids is a big-sized perennial fruit tree grows to a height of 20 m and endemic to Peninsular Malaysia. Sun-dried sliced of the bright orange yellow pumpkin shaped ripe fruits, are locally known as Asam Keping. The young leaves are used for culinary purposes and as a traditional vegetable or ‘ulam’. It is also used as post-partum medication and to treat rheumatism, bowel complaints, cough, dandruff, and stomach pains associated with pregnancy.
Both leaf and fruit parts of asam gelugor were reported to contain Hydroxycitric acid (HCA); a very potent inhibitor of fat and cholesterol synthesis, enhancing the use of this plant in formulating weight-reducing herbal based-product for commercial purposes.
